NBCDI PARENT EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM (PEP)
TRAIN-THE-TRAINER Session
The Parent Empowerment Program was developed by The National Black Child Development Institute (NBCDI) to educate, motivate and inspire parents to excellence as their Child’s first teacher through this exciting interactive curriculum for parent education. Under the auspices of NBCDI, PEP was designed by and for African Americans, but has been demonstrated effective with a broad spectrum of parents.
Dr. Wanda Hackett (President of BCDI-Seattle) and Dr Debra Sullivan (BCDI Education Committee Chair) will offer a one day PEP train-the-trainer session. Who should attend: child care center staff, family support staff, anyone working with diverse families and children.
When: November 11, 2011 from 9 am to 5 pm

Pre-Registration Must register by October 20, 2011, Space is limited, pre-register TODAY.
Registration Fee: $170.00 per person (includes lite lunch, and training materials)
Group Rate (3 or more people from the same organization) AND Current BCDI members: $125.00 per person

Focus is on the whole child from a developmental perspective (social, emotional, cognitive, physical, spiritual/character development, etc.)
· Developmental milestones from birth through age 4 years
|
The philosophy/teaching approach was designed for parents with children ages birth through the fourth year, however, is applicable and useful to parents with children of all ages
|
|
Interactive participant engagement
|
Building genuine and positive relationships child-to-adult, child-to-child, and adult-to-adult
|
|
Application oriented:
· Proactive (supporting growth & development),
· Remedial (closing developmental gaps) and
· Advocacy (preparing parents to advocate for their children at school)

Opportunities to understand the child development process and to connect to effective parenting practices
|

Both process (relationship-based) and content (developmental and cultural perspectives) oriented
|
Learning environment based on strength-based approaches and positive regard, sharing and acceptance

Culture centered (use of the traditions and history of African Americans) through:
· Use of storytelling to enchant
· Use of storytelling to teach morals and values
· Introducing the broad range of achievements of people across race, ethnicity and gender to create a sense of possibility to inspire children to greatness

· The developmental process
· Teaching cultural and family values
· Ways to discipline
· Preparing for the transition from home to child care/preschool/school
